Hardwood Floor Care
Hardwood flooring truly can last forever if it is properly maintained, and it can be among the easiest of all floor surfaces to keep clean and looking like new. To protect yours, the National Wood Floor Association recommends the following:
• Use dirt trapping walk-off mats at all exterior doors.
• Strong sunlight can cause fading of wood and wood stain. To avoid uneven appearance, move area rugs occasionally and drape or shade large windows to avoid direct sunlight on the wood.
• Apply fabric-faced glides to the legs of your furniture.
• Vacuum or dust your wood floor as often as you would your carpet.
• Wipe up food and other spills immediately with a damp (not wet) cloth. Standing moisture can damage poorly finished floors.
• Avoid soaps. They can build up and create problems. For cleaning use cleaners that are specifically formulated for wood floors, such as Bridgepoint Wood Cleaner.
Refinishing Wood Floors
If your hardwood floor is dull even after cleaning, is showing wear in high-traffic areas, is scratched or gouged, or is showing separation between boards, it is probably time to consider refinishing. • Complete cleaning and abrasion as needed to remove dirt, scuff marks, and embedded soil, leaving your floor ready for application of a new finish.
• Your floor is stained and sealed, with a finishing coat in a semi-gloss or matte finish.
